After a vacation fling, a high school sex ed guidance counselor and a single father are forced to face each other in real life. Having been the honor roll student, good girl in high school who got pregnant at sixteen, Cassie Finnerty knows what can happen if teens aren’t educated about safe sex. Her job is to counsel the students, answer their questions, and hand out condoms when requested. Jake Lucas is a divorced, single father raising his almost sixteen-year-old daughter. When the contents of his daughter’s purse spill and condoms tumble out, he freaks out. After interrogating his daughter, he finds out she got the condoms at school, so he goes to confront the person who gave them to her and gets the surprise of his life.
Review: A vacation fling, no strings attached. Then back to your normal life never to see that person again. But, as Cassie finds out her world is about to flip upside down. An irate parent enters Cassie office, because she gave his fifteen year old daughter condoms, she looks up to find none other than her vacation fling Luke standing in the flesh right in front of her.
The attraction that was so hot and heavy on vacation is still there. Once they act upon their feelings things end up getting much worse in the relationship before they get better. There is a big trust issue on all sides and allot of pain and hurt that needs to be taken care of before this couple can move forward.
Cassie finds it hard to keep what Luke’s daughter Megan tells her in confidence at school but she does. In doing so it puts a strain and jeopardizes her relationship with Luke.
Cassie as a counselor has chosen to help other young people make good choices when it comes to sex. This is the whole premise of the story. She made a dumb choice at sixteen but it gave her a wonderful son named Kevin who she wouldn’t trade for anything. But it wasn’t easy going to high school with a baby then onto college. Even though she was able to do it most girls aren’t ready at that age, so Cassie is on a mission to help them.
Luke a single father with a teenage daughter enough said right there. As things go from bad to worse with his daughter he can’t help but feel that Cassie has betrayed him by not informing him of what was going on. But would he have listened?
Ms. Gallagher brought a topic that tends to get covered up out into the open. This makes us realize how important it is to always keep that line of communication open with our teen children and with counselor’s that are only trying to help. Single parents or not it isn’t easy. Kudos to Ms. Gallagher for a refreshing story that touches on allot of important topics.
